Fonseka will be removed from his ministerial post.

presi_sup_p30-Parakum1MP Wimal Weerawansa criticized former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka for saying Sri Lanka must cooperate with  any international inquiry into war crimes.

Wimal Weerawansa said yesterday Minister and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka should be removed from his portfolio for making a treacherous statement on ex-army commander Jagath Jayasuriya.  “Channel 4 is making allegations against Mr. Jayasuriya. Mr. Fonseka’s allegations will fuel such sinister moves. If there are any complaints, there are ways of taking action against the wrongdoers. It is not his duty or responsibility to make statements which betray the army,” Mr. Weerawansa said.

Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU), Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila says that former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka should be arrested immediately for treason in accordance with the Penal Code.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo today (4), he said that the Minister of Regional Development must be arrested for covering up war crimes for a whole 8 years, just for saying that he knew General Jagath Jayasuriya committed war crimes.

The UPFA Colombo District MP claimed that Sarath Fonseka had betrayed the country to Tamil’s the first time when he made a statement about ‘white flags’ and that now he is doing it again by accusing Jagath jayasuriya. Three Tamil Tiger rebel leaders who tried to surrender with white flag after UN negotiated th surrender during the bloody climax of Sri Lanka’s civil war in May were shot and killed on the orders of the country’s defence minister and a senior adviser to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the army commander at the time has claimed.

“Later I learned that Basil [Rajapaska, a senior presidential adviser] had conveyed this information to the defence secretary, Gothabaya Rajapaksa, who in turn spoke with Brigadier Shavendra Silva, commander of the army’s 58th division, giving orders not to accommodate any [Tiger] leaders attempting surrender and that they must all be killed,” Fonseka told the pro-opposition Sunday Leader newspaper in Colombo.

Fonseka said Balasingham Nadesan, head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s political wing, Seevaratnam Puleedevan, head of the group’s peace secretariat, and a Tiger leader known as Ramesh had been assured through intermediaries by Basil Rajapaksa and Gothabaya Rajapaksa, brothers of the president, that they would be given safe conduct.

According to subsequent accounts, the men were advised: “Get a piece of white cloth, put up your hands and walk towards the other side in a non-threatening manner.”  “It [the surrender method] was their idea,” Fonseka told the newspaper, referring to Basil and Gothabaya Rajapaksa.

When the three men approached government lines some time after midnight on 17 May they walked into a trap, Fonseka suggested. Troops opened fire with machine guns, killing all three and a number of family members. A Tamil eyewitness account said Nadesan’s wife, a Sinhalese, called in Sinhali to the soldiers: “He is trying to surrender and you are shooting him.” She also died in the hail of bullets.

However, MP Udaya Gammanpila a well known racist said that regardless of whether war crimes have been committed, Fonseka should be arrested as if he is wrong it is treason against the state and if he is right he can be arrested for covering it up.

Gammanpila and some other racist MPs in parliament wants to cover up the War crimes committed by the military, They insist any inquiry must be in local courts as the judges will not go against the military at any point. They oppose an international inquiry as they fear that they will be unable to manipulate the foreign  judges.
