PTA detainees Jaffna Uni students march to UN office

Jaffna University students handed over a petition yesterday to the United Nations (UN) Office urging the release of all 132 detainees held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), transfer of Court cases of three PTA detainees to Vavuniya and the repealing of the PTA.

Hundreds of students carrying placards marched through the main streets of Jaffna to the UN office. The procession which commenced from the University premises, headed through Palaly Road to the UN office in Jaffna. Students from all faculties of the University as well as non academic staff took part in the protest that was conducted peacefully.

They had also handed over a similar petition to the Northern Province Governor Reginold Cooray’s office to be sent to President Maithripala Sirisena. Prior to that, a meeting with the President over the release of PTA detainees had been held, but it had not yielded encouraging results, the students pointed out.

The students also pointed out that they would intensify their actions for the release of all Tamil PTA detainees if the Government didn’t act positively.
