The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (10), informed Additional Magistrate Mount Lavinia (MTL), Lochana Abeywickrema that they will need to once again record statements from former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former Army Commander Field Marshal and Minister Sarath Fonseka in connection with the journalist Keith Noyahr, abduction and assault case.
The CID informed the Court that they will need to record the statements from Rajapaksa and Fonseka in relation to statements obtained from the eighth suspect in the case,former Army Intelligence Director Major General Amal Karunasekera, as per Court orders.
The Magistrate also ordered the remanded eighth suspect in the case, Karunasekera to be released on bail in three sureties of
Rs 100,000 each.
The Magistrate also ordered the suspect’s passport to be impounded and ordered that one of those furnishing bail for him, other than his wife, should be a relative of his and an executive grade officer.
The Magistrate also ordered the suspect to report to the Organized Crimes Division of the CID on the last Sunday of each month between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. The passports of those furnishing bail for the defendant were impounded.
The suspect was apprehended by the CID on 5 April and charged in the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate’s Court for having violated Section 44 of Firearms Ordinance and Sections 32, 182, 140, 314, 315, 316, 317, 300, 332, 333, 355, 380 of the Penal Code and the Convention against Torture Act, No. 22 of 1994.
Furthermore, six suspects are already out on bail in connection with the case. The case was put off to 25 September.
