Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, yesterday, said that he had been informed by the Attorney General that the latter would initiate legal action against former State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran on her statement calling for the revival of the LTTE.
He said so in response to a query raised by NFF leader MP Wimal Weerawansa.
Weerawansa raising a point of order said: “The Speaker gave an assurance to Parliament that he would seek information from the Attorney General’s Department with regard to deputy minister Maheswaran’s statement which amounted to a violation of the Constitution. Months have elapsed since that undertaking. What action the Speaker will take in that regard?”
The Speaker: The Attorney General will file a case against her. He has informed me of that.
Wimal Weerawansa: The Attorney General will file a case, which will drag on for years to come. When will that case come to an end?
Speaker Jayasuriya: The Attorney General will file a case. He will see to that.
MP Weerawansa: We as MPs have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution. That has been violated. What is the Speaker doing about it?
Speaker Jayasuriya: I will take my action after the court ruling on the case.
