A group in the SLFP has decided to function independently, without accepting government positions or privileges, say political sources. They say that going by the dark shadows in the past two to three days it is evident that the dictatorial, family rule of the Rajapaksa regime has made a return.
It will be a traitorous act politically to act under Mahinda Rajapaksa’s leadership and policies. This group has informed the president about their decision, the sources say. Their decision has been prompted also by the harassment they have undergone at the hands of the Rajapaksa family members and their followers.
The focus presently is on the composition of parliament in light of crossovers in a scenario of political stalemate. If it is surmised that all UPFA MPs support the interim regime, it will have 95 MPs, plus the support of Douglas Devananda’s EPDP.
Four from the UNP – Wijedasa Rajapakshe, Wasantha Senanayake, Ananda Aluthgamage and Vadivel Suresh too – have accepted ministerial positions.
Therefore, the Maithripala-Mahinda alliance has the support of a total of 100 MPs.
The UNP had a total of 106 MPs, including the speaker.
The party also has the backing of a SLMC MP. With four of its MPs crossing over, the UNP now has the support of a total of 102 MPs.
The ITAK, which is yet to take a decision, has 16 MPs and the JVP has six MPs and that party has decided to support neither side.
A crossover is worth 2 m USD?
With a group in the SLFP deciding to remain independent and the Rajapaksas trying to lure them as well as those from the UNP and from Muslim and Tamil parties, the situation is likely to aggravate further in the coming days.
According to talk in the political circle, a crossover is said to be worth two million US dollars plus a cabinet position. A foreign country has reportedly provided money to pay the crossovers.
