Corrupt people given second chance by Mahinda

President Maithripala Sirisena had given corrupt MPs a second chance to embezzle money by appointing them to the same ministerial positions they held during the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration, United national Party (UNP) Parliamentarian S. M. Marikkar told media yesterday at a press conference in Colombo.

“The President has renominated a man who had a case filed against him for providing state-built houses for his family members as Minister of Housing. The same is true for the Minister of Cooperatives. This is insane and dissolving Parliament is dictatorial.”

The Colombo District MP said that the UNP should not stop at issuing press releases and holding media conferences. “We must educate the people on why we say that removing Ranil Wickremesinghe and dissolving Parliament were illegal. We have two options, one is going to the Supreme Court on Monday (12) but we must also prepare for elections. We need to defeat the evil leader and his henchmen and establish a UNP government.”

During recent years a large number of UNPers had moved away from the party because the Wickremesinghe administration did not provide them with jobs, houses and other benefits. “But they have rallied behind the party because of what the President did. A lot of middle class people who left us because we didn’t catch crooks have also come back to the party,” he said.

Marikkar also said that the SLFP and- SLPP alliance was not as strong as it looked on paper. “There are some internal conflicts. For example the President appointed Keheliya Rambukwelle the state minister of media but he then handed over all the state media institutions to Minster Dayasiri Jayasekera. This shows that although the President made Mahinda Rajapaksa the Prime Minister, he doesn’t trust SLPP MPs.”
