Dr. Nalin Kitulwala, Specialist in charge of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital (LRH), Colombo revealed about a fatal contagion that can be contracted in children recovering from Covid infection, known as Silent Hypoxia.
He made this revelation speaking to a briefing held today (24).
Dropped down oxygen levels in blood during normal activity or play in children who have recovered from the infection have been characterised as the primary symptoms of the disease, he noted.
It is noteworthy that this disease does not show the typical symptoms of dropped down oxygen levels, which are breathing difficulties and speaking difficulties.
Therefore, it is very important to check the oxygen level of children, at least once a day, and the constant vigilance would be of utmost importance, Dr. Kitulwala emphasised.
If the oxygen level in blood is less than 94 per cent during play, or below 96 per cent during normal activity, parents are advised to take their children to immediate medical care, he added.
