Signs of a ‘Super Delta Variant’ of Covid in Sri Lanka? Report in a week

The Covid strain that is currently prevalent in Colombo is 100% the delta variant, a report by a group of researchers of the Institute of Allergy Immunology and Molecular Biology at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura revealed yesterday (28).

The report added that the alpha variant of the Covid virus is weakening and the delta variant is spreading across other parts of the island.

Dr. Chandima Jeewandara went on record saying that the spread of the virus in several areas including Colombo has led to the suspicion whether the delta variant has been mutated into a ‘Super Delta Variant’ of the virus. The Institute of Allergy Immunology and Molecular Biology has commenced tests to substantiate this and another test report will be released within a week, he noted.

Research indicates that people with delta Covid infections are twice as likely to be hospitalised than those of alpha variant.
