Former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, who is currently in remand custody at the Magazine Prison was yesterday detected talking on a cell phone by the Chief Jailer, Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake yesterday said.
The Prisons Spokesman said that the Chief Jailer had seen Bathiudeen speaking on the phone while they were passing by his cell.
When the jailers approached, Bathiudeen had thrown away his phone, Ekanayake said.
“However, the mobile phone was retrieved and handed over to the intelligence unit for further investigations.”
Bathiudeen was arrested and remanded in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks. He has also been named as a suspect in the death of a young girl employed in his Colombo residence as a domestic worker.
A few weeks ago, Bathiudeen allegedly threatened a doctor attached to the prison hospital with death.
