Statement by the Opposition Leader on the Government’s Monetary Bill

The government has resorted to money laundering instead of troubleshooting the financial crisis currently befallen the country, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said in a statement today (07).

The government’s conduct is paving the way for smugglers to whitewash money, the Opposition Leader pointed out, adding that the country, therefore, is being driven towards ‘lumpen capitalism’, thereby violating social justice.

Emphasising that law should be enforced against anyone hiding without paying taxes and that there are enough provisions in this regard, Premadasa suggested that the government, on the other hand, is at an attempt to provide tax relief to a mere percentage of 01 per cent of smugglers and certain tycoons.

The government’s monetary bill would be providing protection to these smugglers who have unjustly amassed wealth and are hiding tax money, he noted, adding that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the Opposition, accordingly, will be strongly opposed to this harmful policy.
