Former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake has taken legal actions against State Minister Wimalaweera Dissanayake and MP Kokila Gunawardena for damaging his reputation by allegedly producing false statements.
Accordingly, the former minister has sent letters of demand to the two Ruling Party MPs, demanding two compensations of Rs. 2000 million, a total of Rs. 4000 million, within a period of two weeks.
Joining the ‘Waadapitiya’ Live Political Program on TV Derana on 07.08.2021, MP Gunawardena had accused the former minister of involving in a number of fraudulent activities such slashing taxes on sugar, fraudulently importing and storing sugar, and providing storage facilities to close friends and companies for the importation of sugar under the Yahapalana Government, while State Minister Dissanayake had made a similar false accusation speaking to 6.55 pm news at Hiru TV on 05.08.2021, Karunanayake revealed.
The former minister’s party pointed out that the two had willfully acted on damaging his image, both personally and politically, by levelling baseless allegations before the national television in the motive of misleading the public.
A statement made by Mr. Karunanayake added that a company owned by the former minister’s daughter had also been accused of similar false conduct on a previous occasion, which had already been debunked via an official statement. Despite the statement, such defamatory acts are continuously being committed aiming former minister’s family, further depressing them mentally, it added.
