Ajith Nivard Cabraal has assumed duties as the new Governor for the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) a short while ago. The new CBSL Governor obtained interfaith blessings as he assumed his duties.
Cabraal served as the State Minister of Finance, Capital Markets and Public Enterprise Reforms and was re-appointed as the CBSL Governor at the invitation of President Rajapaksa.
A veteran Chartered Accountant, Cabraal was the CBSL Governor during the 2005 – 2015 period when Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa was the President.
Cabraal’s appointment as the new CBSL Governor has severely been criticised by a number of parties including the Opposition. A mandamus writ petition has also been lodged before the Appeal Court against Cabraal’s appointment.
