The government has signed a compact with a US-based company at 12.06 am on September 17 to sell 40 per cent of the state-owned shares of West Coast Company, which owns the Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi Power Plant, and to supply natural liquefied gas, divulged Leader of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, speaking to a press conference held yesterday (19).
Disregarding the quarantine curfew imposed against the Covid-19 situation in Sri Lanka, the government is making harmful decisions to the country, he pointed out.
“This Cabinet Paper was tabled on 06.09.2021. At the time of approving the paper, no Cabinet Miniser had seen it. But it has been approved by the Cabinet anyway. Being approved, it says, “The agreement will be tabled in the Cabinet for approval upon the signing of the agreement for sale and purchase of shares.” What more do they have to approve after signing it? The signing has already been done!
So what happened then? The night of the 17th was historic in this country. When was such an agreement signed? I saw media reports that this agreement was signed at 12.06 am on the 17th. An agreement about the country is signed at 12 am on Friday, and the foreigner who signed it leaves for the US on the 2 am flight. Then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa too leaves for America. This was what happened.
Who are these people to sign compacts at 12.06 am in the middle of the night? Are they owls? Nocturnal animals?
What will happen now? The owner of the energy sector will be making the decisions on our government tomorrow. We hope to take legal action to prevent this from happening. A team of lawyers has been assigned to study the matter. Remember, nobody can take themselves to the streets amid this Covid situation. Everything is being thrown into the den and decisions unfavourable to the country are being made,” the JVP Leader emphasised.
