Registering wild elephant smugglers like licencing criminals to hold illegal firearms: AKD

The court decision to return unlicenced elephants, which were being kept in custody before 2019, to their original owners was issued based on a gazette declaration made by the State Minister of Wildlife, revealed Leader of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and National People’s Power (NPP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake speaking to Parliament today (22).

These elephants had been named as subjects of cases pending trial regarding the illegal possession of elephants.

The relevant gazette declaration proposes to issue licences to those who had been possessing these elephants illegally, MP Dissanayake pointed out, adding that this move could be paving the way for wild elephant smugglers to ladder themselves up.

Resembling the move with the act of licencing criminals to possess illegal firearms, the JVP Leader added that this would be a serious crime.
