Lewis Hamilton topped qualifying for the Turkish GP but it is team-mate Valtteri Bottas who will start on pole due to the championship leader’s grid penalty, with Max Verstappen moved up to the front row.

Hamilton is set to start Sunday’s race from 11th as he extracted the most out of the shootout in light of his 10-place grid drop for a new engine, which was confirmed long before he dominated qualifying.

Fastest in a wet-dry Q1 and Q2, before setting a new track record in Q3, Hamilton was in sublime form around an Istanbul Park circuit he loves.

And it was a best-case scenario result for Mercedes as Bottas finished second and only a tenth behind Hamilton, assuming pole position.

He will line up on the Turkish GP grid ahead of Hamilton’s title rival Verstappen, who showed signs of improvement in a slower-than-expected Red Bull but was still 0.3s off the man he trails by two points in the championship.
