State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura speaking to the media regarding the fertiliser crisis in the country stated that the government is preparing to provide chemical fertiliser for tea cultivation under a licence system upon calculating the amount of chemical fertiliser required for the crops.
“We are preparing to provide chemical fertiliser for tea cultivation under a licence system. Looking at the requirement, we may exclude the figures involving organic farming, by 50 per cent. Because not that much fertiliser is used. So, there are small tea growers associations, as well as the Tea Research Institute. They have recommended quantities. Providing a subsidy, we are promoting compost fertiliser,” he said.
