Deputy Chairman of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha, K.G. Piyatissa, and two others, who were arrested yesterday for entering Mederigama Vidyalaya last week (Nov 03), assaulting a parent and threatening the principal and teachers, were granted bail by courts
The other suspects are also SLPP local councillors.
Teachers and Principals Trade Union Alliance threatened to intensify their trade union action if the three men were not arrested.
Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) general secretary Joseph Stalin said the three men had initially assaulted a parent demonstrating in support of the teachers and principals.
“While parents of Mederigama Vidyalaya, Mawanella were demonstrating in support of us, Piyatissa and two other councillors chased them away. They assaulted one parent. Then the councillors entered the school and roamed around yelling at teachers,” Stalin said, adding that attempts to intimidate teachers had failed, and recent demonstrations by them had made it clear that the overwhelming majority of teachers, principals and parents were supportive of the teachers’ unions.
