State Minister of Drug Supply Channa Jayasumana speaking to media in Colombo today (15) revealed that the Covid Technical Committee has approved Molnupiravir, a capsule manufactured for Covid treatment.
Molnupiravir is currently approved by several countries including the United Kingdom. The capsule will be first western oral medicine approved for Covid treatment, the Minister said.
He added that a decision will be taken regarding the registration of the capsule as a medicine approved by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) and that a discussion will be held with the President to make a decision on how the capsule should be distributed to the Public Sector.
The matter will also be discussed with other parties at the Covid-19 Task Force soon, Jayasumana added, revealing that the several companies have already come forward to supply Molnupiravir.
Research has revealed that Molnupiravir is approved for people with mild to moderate symptoms of Covid, and that an 800 mg capsule should be given twice a day for five days.
The capsule can be administered to anyone, including those vaccinated but infected with the virus.
Jayasumana added that research has shown that Molnupiravir has the ability to reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality influenced by Covid by 50 per cent.
Globally recognised as a successful medication, Molnupiravir is preventing the replication of molecules containing the genetic codes of the virus, he added.
