High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to South Africa  Amarasekara, Presents Credentials to  the President of the Republic of Botswana

Sri Lanka High Commissioner for South Africa Sirisena Amarasekara, Presented credentials to Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana as Sri Lanka High Commissioner for Botswana in Gaborone, the Capital City of Botswana. Botswana is one of the 9 countries accredited to the Sri Lanka High Commission in South Africa and is one of the Southern African countries where a large number of Sri Lankan Professionals are working.

At the ceremony, Sirisena Amarasekara, Sri Lanka High Commissioner (designate) to Botswana was introduced to the President of Botswana by Dr Lemongang Kwape, the Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation of Botswana, as the new High Commissioner (designate) to Botswana. Then the  High Commissioner  Amarasekara conveyed the greeting from the President of Sri Lanka to the President of Botswana.

After presenting the letters of credence, the President of Botswana had a very pleasant and affectionate discussion about 20 minutes with the new High Commissioner. During the meeting, he expressed gratitude to the President of Sri Lanka for giving due recognition to the African Region in his foreign policy and drew the attention of the High Commissioner to the need to promote tourism between Sri Lanka and Botswana.  He also has expressed Botswana’s commitment to safeguarding the long-standing democratic system and sovereignty of Sri Lanka in common forums as a friendly country. The new High Commissioner was requested to contribute to the maximum possible level to promote the socio-economic and cultural relationship between the two nations.

High Commissioner Amarasekara is a senior   public servant who has experienced over fifty years in the public sector. He  has joined the Ministry of Planning and Employment in 1970 and served as Secretary to several ministries for over 20 years including as Secretary to the Prime Minister on 2 occasions and as the Secretary to the Cabinet of Ministers before taking up his current post as the Sri Lanka High Commissioner to South Africa. High Commissioner Amarsekara was accompanied by his spouse Hema Amarasekara and the Minister Counsellor, Priyangani Hewarathna to the Credential ceremony.
