Minor party leaders channel private lawyers

Ministers Wimal Weerawansa, Vasudewa Nanayakkara and Udaya Gammanpila have decided to channel a separate collective of lawyers at the hearing of the petitions filed before the Supreme Court against the Cabinet decision on selling government shares of the Yugadanavi Power Plant in Kerawalapitiya to a US Company.

This is reportedly the first time in which private attorneys are to appear for a group of government ministers in a hearing against the Cabinet, in contrast to the general practice of the Attorney General appearing for the Cabinet.

The said ministers have decided to channel private lawyers in the event that they hold a contradictory opinion on the selling of the Yugadanavi Power Plant compared with that of the other Cabinet ministers.

As of now, five Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the Cabinet’s decision on selling the Plant, seeking an order nullifying the decision to hand over the shares of the Plant and the Sri Lankan gas monopoly to the US Company in question.
