MP Hesha Withanage reveals person died in Police custody was a demonstrator at SJB Protest, urges immediate probe

A person under the custody of the Panamure Police Station reportedly died last (17) night in what the Police described as a suicide. The incident, however, has led to an unrest among the residents of the area, with acting on closing the road and obstructing Police duty.

The residents claim that the Police should be responsible for the victim’s death and two Police officers attached to the Panamure Police station have been suspended of duties.

Speaking to Parliament on the incident, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Hesha Withanage disclosed that the victim was a demonstrator at the public protest organised by the Party in Colombo yesterday. Claiming that his death is suspicious, the SJB MP urged that an immediate probe be launched into the incident.

In response, Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara stated that there is no connection between the victim’s death and the protest whatsoever. The deceased was a drug addict who used to beat his wife and children often as per multiple complaints received, the Minister claimed. The arrest was made based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s daughter, Weerasekara went on, adding that his death has been confirmed as an act of suicide.
